uBreakiFix vs. Geek Squad: Services, Pros & Cons

If you’re comparing uBreakiFix vs. Geek Squad, the better choice depends largely on the type of computer problem you have.

uBreakiFix by Asurion is particularly well suited to people who want an in-person repair shop. With more than 700 locations, uBreakiFix handles laptop and PC repairs, hardware problems, virus and spyware removal, computer tune-ups, and other device repairs. They offer free diagnostics for many problems, and most repairs include a one-year limited warranty. Pricing varies depending on the device and repair needed.

Geek Squad also offers in-store computer repair, but has a broader mix of in-store and remote computer services. Best Buy publishes set prices for several common services, including computer setup, hardware installation, virus and operating-system repair, and data backup or transfer.

When uBreakiFix or Geek Squad May Make Sense

For physical repairs such as a damaged laptop, broken screen, battery problem, charging issue, or other hardware failure, uBreakiFix specializes in hands-on device repair and may be worth considering.

For software problems and remote computer help, Geek Squad offers more remote-service options. Independent remote computer support can also be worth considering if you don’t want to disconnect your computer, take it to a store, and wait for it to be repaired.

If the problem can be fixed remotely — such as a slow computer, email problem, software issue, virus or pop-up problem, printer setup, or general troubleshooting — That Tech Jeff provides nationwide U.S.-based remote computer help without requiring a trip to a repair shop.

Bottom line: uBreakiFix focuses heavily on hands-on hardware and device repair, while Geek Squad offers a mix of in-store, in-home, and remote services. For computer problems that can be handled remotely, online support provides another option without requiring you to take the computer to a repair shop.

FAQs

  • Do you need a Geek Squad membership to get service?
No. You don’t need a membership to purchase many Geek Squad services individually. Best Buy also offers My Best Buy Total for $199.99 per year, which includes certain in-store and remote computer and tablet services along with other benefits. Whether the membership makes financial sense depends on how often you use those services.

  • How much does Geek Squad typically cost?
Geek Squad pricing depends on the service and whether the help is remote, in-store or in-home. For example, Best Buy currently lists Operating System Tune-Up and Upgrade at $39.99 remote, Software Setup or Troubleshooting at $39.99 remote, and Printer Setup at $124.99 in-home. My Best Buy Total is $199.99 per year and includes certain in-store and remote computer and tablet services. Prices and availability can change.

  • Does Geek Squad repair computers at home?
Yes. Geek Squad offers in-home services for certain computer and technology needs. Depending on the problem, you may also have the option of in-store or remote support. For software problems that can be handled remotely, services like That Tech Jeff provide another option without requiring an in-home visit or a trip to a repair shop.

  • What’s the difference between in-home vs remote tech support?
In-home tech support means a technician physically comes to your location, while remote tech support is provided online through a secure connection with your permission. In-home service can be useful for hardware problems that require hands-on work. Remote support can handle many software problems, email issues, printer setup, malware and pop-up problems, computer tune-ups, and general troubleshooting without requiring you to take the computer to a repair shop.

  • What happens if my issue isn’t fixed?
With That Tech Jeff, if I can’t fix the problem, there’s no charge. You don’t pay me to try — you pay when it’s fixed. That applies whether I’m troubleshooting a computer problem, fixing email, setting up a printer, removing malware, or helping with another issue remotely.

  • What’s the biggest difference between remote-only services and in-store services like Geek Squad?
Remote support lets a technician troubleshoot many computer problems online without requiring you to disconnect the computer or take it to a repair shop. In-store service provides hands-on access to the computer, which can be important for hardware repairs. Pricing and service models vary by provider, so it’s worth comparing flat rates, individual service charges, memberships, and what each service includes.

Jeff offers a great service to many of us who depend on technology, but can't easily solve the technical problems when they arise. His sincerity in wanting to help you comes across very strong. Jeff talks through what he is doing so you can understand the steps he is taking which I found very valuable. I felt like I was in class listening to the teacher and taking notes. I also found that he is a bulldog and won't give up until he solves it. Jeff never tried to upsell me, but instead, when he discovered other technical issues that should be addressed, he just went ahead and corrected them. I respect someone who truly delivers on his promises. I am normally nervous dealing with someone over the internet, but I am glad I found Jeff and I can say I trust him.
