McAfee Pop Ups
Getting McAfee and Norton Pop-Ups?
This is a very common issue and it’s not caused by an actual McAfee product. Here’s what’s really going on:
🚨 What Your Seeing
Those McAfee pop-ups in the browser are not from McAfee itself, and they’re not caused by a virus, either. They’re scareware-style ads coming from malicious or misleading websites.
These pop-ups often say things like:
-
“Your McAfee subscription has expired.”
-
“Your computer is infected!”
-
“Click here to scan your PC.”
Even though they look official, they’re really:
-
Trying to trick users into buying fake antivirus software.
-
Collecting credit card or personal information.
-
Convincing users to install actual malware.
Why am I getting random McAfee pop-ups?
How do I stop annoying McAfee pop-ups?
✅ Why Antivirus Scans Come Up Clean
Because these are browser-based pop-up ads, not system-level malware. That means:
-
They’re not traditional viruses or trojans.
-
They’re often tied to bad browser extensions, notification permissions, or sneaky redirects from previously visited sites.
🛑 Stop the Fake McAfee Pop-Ups (in 5 Easy Steps!)
Hi there! If you’re seeing pop-ups in your web browser about McAfee—even though you don’t use McAfee or already scanned your computer—don’t worry. These pop-ups are just annoying ads and not a virus.
Here’s how to make them stop:
✅ Step 1: Remove Unwanted Browser Notifications
Google Chrome (on Windows or Mac):
-
Open Chrome.
-
Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner.
-
Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings.
-
Scroll down and click Notifications.
-
Under “Allowed to send notifications,” look for anything strange—like:
-
totalpcdefender.com -
mcafeesecuritynotification.com -
or anything that doesn’t look familiar.
-
-
Click the three dots next to it and choose Remove or Block.
✅ Step 2: Remove Suspicious Extensions
-
In Chrome, click the three dots again.
-
Go to Extensions > Manage Extensions.
-
Look for anything you don’t recognize or don’t remember installing.
-
Click Remove next to anything that looks suspicious.
✅ Step 3: Clear Out Junk and Reset the Browser (Optional but Helpful)
If the pop-ups keep coming back:
-
Open Chrome Settings again.
-
Scroll all the way down and click Reset settings.
-
Choose Restore settings to their original defaults.
-
Click Reset settings.
This will remove extensions and restore your browser to default—your bookmarks will stay safe!
✅ Step 4: Use a Trusted Cleaner (Optional)
Sometimes it helps to run a tool like:
-
Malwarebytes Free: https://www.malwarebytes.com
-
Or ask me for help!
✅ Step 5: Be Careful What You Click
Pop-ups like these often show up after clicking:
-
Ads on sketchy websites
-
Fake “Download” or “Play” buttons
-
Email links that look official but aren’t
Next time, if something looks suspicious—just close the tab. Don’t click anything.
