The holidays are the best time of year to connect with the people we love — whether they live across town or across the country. But before the Christmas calls, online shopping, and photo printing begin, it’s a great idea to give your technology a little check-up so everything goes smoothly.

Holiday Tech Tips

Here’s a simple holiday tech checklist I recommend to all my senior clients to help you stay safe, stay connected, and stay merry this season.

1. Make Sure Your Video Calls Are Ready to Go

Nothing is more frustrating than a camera or microphone that doesn’t work — especially when the grandkids are waiting on the other end.

Before Christmas morning:

  • Open Zoom or FaceTime and do a quick test call

  • Make sure the camera and microphone are working

  • Update the apps if they ask you to

  • If you use Zoom, sign into your account ahead of time so there are no password surprises

Tip: If you’d like help testing your video setup, I’m always happy to walk you through it step-by-step — at no charge for a quick test.

2. Update Your Printer (and Ink!) for Holiday Photos

Many people love printing out family photos or Christmas letters this time of year — right until they discover the printer is out of ink or refuses to cooperate.

Before the big day:

  • Check your ink or toner levels

  • Print a test page to make sure the colors look right

  • Make sure the printer is still connected to Wi-Fi (this is a common one!)

If your printer suddenly “goes on strike,” I can reinstall or fix it for you — and I’m currently running a holiday printer install special for just $49.99 when booked by phone.

3. Stay Safe While Shopping Online

Scammers are extremely active during the holidays because they know more people are shopping online — especially for deals.

Here are a few quick safety reminders:

  • Only shop on trusted, well-known websites

  • If the price looks too good to be true, it probably is

  • Never click links in random emails or texts offering “free gifts” or “urgent deliveries”

  • Always check that the web address starts with https:// before entering payment info

If you’re ever unsure whether a website is safe, feel free to ask me — I’ll take a quick look and let you know.

4. Update Your Device for Better Performance

Little slowdowns can cause big headaches when you’re trying to send family photos or join a call. A quick tune-up before the holidays can make everything run more smoothly.

Consider:

  • Installing any pending Windows or Mac updates

  • Restarting your device (yep — it really helps!)

  • Clearing old clutter that slows things down

And if your computer feels sluggish, I offer a complete clean-and-tune service with zero risk — if it doesn’t run better when I’m done, you don’t pay.

5. Make Tech Gift-Giving Easier
